On Thursday 26th March, the whole Year 8 cohort were treated to a creative careers presentation by a graphic and motion designer, Jamaal Purcell-Edwards.

As a Dagenham resident, Jamaal was keen to share his career pathway and current work with our students, expanding their horizons as to what is possible for them in the creative industries.

Jamaal shared his college and university experiences, how he went about getting into the world of work, as well as what projects he’s currently working on.

A highlight of the presentation for the Year 8s was definitely when Jamaal revealed that he had worked with Nike, Arsenal FC, made a music video with Stormzy and was part of the team that designed the graphics for the new EA Sports Football Ultimate Team.

Our Visual Arts curriculum prepares students for life beyond secondary education by instilling cultural capital, through culturally enriched experiences that they may not otherwise enjoy and learn from. This vital element of the curriculum both strengthens students’ practice and enables students to access career pathways towards the creative industries and beyond.

Both Jamaal and myself were extremely impressed by the engagement and behaviour of the Year 8s. They asked insightful questions and showed a lot of respect for their speaker.

Well done Year 8s, we are PROUD!
