Create Your Pathway
The Visual Arts department held a creative careers and pathways day on Tuesday 16th September, for all our GCSE and A Level students.
The day started with a presentation by Gavin Spoors, an Engagement Officer from Norwich University of the Arts. As well as sharing relevant course information in the creative arts, Gavin provided important labour market information to help students understand how much the Arts contributes to the UK economy.
Did you know that the creative industries contribute £126 billion to the UK economy each year? Furthermore, as of 2024, about 2.4 million filled jobs in the UK are in the creative industries. That’s roughly 7% of all UK filled jobs! Eastbrook students certainly have an advantage in the creative sector, as London dominates output and jobs. More than half of the creative industries’ economic output is generated in London.
After the presentation, Gavin and Tanis, a NUA student and Eastbrook School alumnus, worked with smaller GCSE and A Level groups. Gavin set a university style creative brief, which was fulfilled through the mediums of photography and graphic communication. A huge thank you must go to Gavin for taking the time to work with our students and providing us with some excellent resources.
Joseph in Year 11 said: “It was really interesting to learn about how many different creative courses there are at university and what kinds of jobs there are out there.” Fatema in Year 12 is keen to get into the world of film and television and shared that: “Although my parents are sceptical, I now have more knowledge of the labour market to discuss viable creative career pathways with them.”
At Eastbrook School, our Art and Design curriculum is not just about learning how to paint, draw, photograph and model. We aim to give all our students opportunities to learn about the creative industries and discover what’s out there in the world of work for our dedicated students.
Well done to all our Eastbrook artists who participated in this important day; we are PROUD!
