Debate Mate Accelerate Programme Success – A Historic Win for Eastbrook

13 Jun

Since November, a select group of Year 8 boys have been taking part in the Debate Mate Accelerate Programme, an exciting opportunity to develop high-level debating and public speaking skills. Supported by Hannah from Debate Mate and our very own Mr Raja, the boys had been meeting weekly to refine their techniques and build confidence in public speaking.

Over the weeks, they not only honed their skills but also worked in teams to develop innovative pitches aimed at improving life at Eastbrook School. Their ideas were creative, practical, and inspiring — ranging from the creation of an Enrichment and Rewards Room, launching a school podcast, and increasing access to fitness facilities for students.

Each team presented their pitch to a panel of judges from Debate Mate and senior leaders in school, who scored them based on the content and the style of their delivery. It was truly remarkable to see just how much progress the boys made in such a short time — from hesitant speakers to confident, persuasive presenters.

After a long wait, the results were announced this week. With schools from across the country participating, the competition was fierce. But we are incredibly proud to share that all three Eastbrook teams placed in the top 4 nationally!

•        🥇 1st Place: Free Will with their pitch for an Enrichment and Rewards Room

•        🥉 3rd Place: Kool Kids with the idea for a student-led school podcast

•        🏅 4th Place: Further Fitness promoting access to fitness facilities for students

Even more exciting — when the points were averaged across all teams, Eastbrook School was declared the overall national winner of the Debate Mate Accelerate Secondary Competition for the first time in our history!

This is an incredible achievement and a testament to the hard work, creativity, and determination of the 13 Year 8 boys involved. We are so proud of every single one of them, and grateful to Hannah and Mr Raja for their outstanding guidance and support throughout the programme.

Congratulations, Eastbrook Debaters — you’ve made history!
