World War II Comes Alive at Eastbrook
On Monday 1st December, Year 6 children were transported back in time 85 years ago to World War II. Children came to school dressed as evacuees and their costumes looked very authentic, some even had name tags and gas masks with them!
The children took part in a game of battle ships, reminiscent of the Battle of the Atlantic during their maths lesson, they took part in a Now Press Play drama experience during their English lesson, they designed and made morale posters during their art lesson and lastly, they presented an assembly to their families and other Key Stage 2 children.
The assembly was delightful, the children described how World War II began, they recounted their trips to the Army Museum and The Imperial War Museum and how these visits had impacted their learning. They showed off their artwork in the form of poppy collages, Blitz paintings and blackout poetry. They read extracts of letters that they had written in role as evacuees and poems they had composed based on Flanders Field. They quizzed their audience on World War II artefacts and their uses. Finally, to end, they sang the wartime classic favourite song ' We'll Meet Again' by Dame Vera Lynn.
The children's oracy was beautiful to listen to and they presented with clear voices and passion for their learning. A fabulous end to a very poignant history topic. Well done Year 6 – we are PROUD!
