Pondering over Paintings

18 Jun

On Tuesday 17th June, Year 6 visited The National Gallery in London. Students were enthralled by the beautiful artwork and the sumptuous galleries.

They were taken on a tour by Daisy, who worked at the gallery. She explained the reasoning and composition behind some of paintings. The children had to solve her clues to find out more about the paintings. There were some fabulous and thought-provoking questions asked by the children.

They looked at ‘The Two Ambassadors’ by Hans Holbein, ‘The Chair’ by Van Gogh and a painting of the nativity scene. They discovered that the position of viewing artwork can change with a different perspective or the fact that ‘The Chair’ was in fact one of a pair of paintings.

After some lunch at the gallery, it was a beautiful day for a stroll along the Thames and take in the breathtaking London skyline.
