Marvellous Maritime Adventures
Year 6 children had a fabulous day out exploring in Greenwich and East London. The first stop of the day was Canary Wharf, the children marvelled at the enormity of the immense glass structures and enjoyed a scenic ride through the skyscrapers on the DLR.
The next destination was the Cutty Sark. The children were impressed to learn about the beautiful tea clipper's past. They then enjoyed an impromptu morning break snack alongside the Thames and a stroll through the picturesque buildings of Greenwich University.
Once at the National Maritime Museum, the children enjoyed exploring the galleries. They learnt about the equipment that past polar explorers used, had a go at loading a cargo ship with a winch, dressed up in maritime outfits, fired cannons at enemy ships, viewed sunken maritime artefacts and practised making food fit for a ship's captain. Lexi said that she really enjoyed dressing up as crew of a ship and pretending to eat hard tack (sea biscuits). Klaudio was also surprised at how tall emperor penguins are in real life!
After a picnic lunch in the park, the children hiked up the hill to the Royal Observatory, where they were able to view London's impressive skyline. They also saw the famous - Greenwich Prime Meridian Line - they then had a go at jumping from the East to Western hemisphere.
The children exhibited exemplary behaviour throughout the day - we are very PROUD of you Year 6!
