Dramatic Sinking of The Endurance

16 Apr

Children in Year 6 performed some drama based on the book they are reading, ‘Shackleton’s Journey’. They acted out roles on board the ship from carpenter, cook, deckhand, geologist etc. They then role played them hearing the ship (The Endurance) creaking and groaning against the pack ice, trapped in the Weddell Sea of Antarctica.

Eventually there were louder groans and bangs, so the crew decided to abandon ship and establish a camp on the ice. The children acted out their roles, demonstrating desperation, anxiety and fear in their movements and expressions on their faces. Finally, they watched as the boat was swallowed up by the ice, despair, horror and tragedy visibly etched on their faces.
