We Are Truly Artists
Year 5 had a truly inspiring day at the National Gallery, where they took part in an exciting art workshop exploring the work of famous artists and creating their own masterpieces.
The children began by studying the dramatic seascapes of William Turner, focusing on Dutch Boats in a Gale – “The Bridgewater Sea Piece”. They discussed how Turner used light, movement and colour to capture the power of the sea, before attempting to recreate the energy and atmosphere of the painting in their own work.
Children also explored Luca Giordano’s Perseus Turning Phineus and His Followers to Stone, looking closely at the use of gesture, expression and storytelling within the artwork. The children were fascinated by the dramatic scene and used it as inspiration to create their own expressive interpretations.
Using a range of different media, including pencil, charcoal and a rubber, the children experimented with texture, shading and colour to bring their ideas to life. They showed great creativity and confidence as they explored new techniques and styles.
Throughout the day, the children were fully engaged in their activities and showed fantastic enthusiasm and focus. It was wonderful to see their excitement as they worked like real artists and shared their ideas with one another. Everyone had a fantastic time, and the visit was a memorable experience that truly brought art to life.
