Paddling Along in Trewern

14 Oct

There’s something magical about the sound of paddles dipping into calm canal water, especially when there a team of excited young adventurers learning to steer their first canoe!

Today, children took to the water for a fun-filled canoeing session designed to teach paddling skills, teamwork, and water safety. The sun was shining, the ducks were curious, and laughter echoed along the towpath as canoes glided past.

Before setting off, the young paddlers learned the basics: how to hold a paddle, balance in the canoe, and most importantly, how to work as a team. It turns out that moving in a straight line takes more than just enthusiasm, it takes coordination and communication! Pairs of children quickly discovered that paddling in sync makes a significant difference.

Canal life is always busy, so the group also learned how to safely share the water with other users from narrowboats and paddleboarders to friendly walkers and cyclists on the towpath. By the end of the session, every child had mastered the basics and gained a huge confidence boost. There were cheers as canoes raced back to the jetty, and proud smiles as paddles were lifted in celebration. As the day ended, the young canoeists left with tired arms, happy hearts, and a new appreciation for teamwork.
