Money Money Money
Year Five children recently took part in an exciting hands-on Maths challenge focused on Money and Enterprise. Working in teams, children were given a budget of £25.00 and challenged to carefully select products to purchase and resell in their own class shop.
This engaging activity gave children a meaningful opportunity to apply their mathematical knowledge in a real-life context. Throughout the challenge, they relied on mental calculation strategies to make quick decisions, while developing confidence with addition and subtraction of decimals as they tracked spending, calculated totals, and ensured they stayed within budget.
Teamwork was at the heart of the experience. Children worked collaboratively to discuss ideas, compare prices, make financial decisions, and agree on the best products to maximise their budget. As the activity progressed, they became increasingly confident and demonstrated impressive communication skills.
One of the highlights was seeing the children develop into skilled negotiators, discussing value for money, justifying their choices, and making thoughtful decisions together.
Most importantly, the children thoroughly enjoyed this practical approach to learning. It was fantastic to see enthusiasm, problem-solving and mathematical thinking come together in such a memorable experience.
Well done to all of our young entrepreneurs!
