Why is research in sociology important?

26 Jan

As part of the Research Methods unit, Year 10 Sociology students have been developing their understanding of sociological research by creating PowerPoint presentations focused on this key question.

To meet the success criteria, students began by providing a clear explanation of what research is in sociology, defining sociological research methods such as surveys, interviews, and observations. This helped students demonstrate a strong foundation in key sociological concepts and terminology.

Students also explored why research is important, developing at least two well-explained reasons. These included how research helps sociologists understand social behaviour, identify patterns and inequalities, and inform policies and decisions that can lead to positive social change.

To strengthen their arguments, students researched real-life sociological studies, outlining what the researchers investigated, the methods they used, what they discovered, and why their findings are useful to society. This allowed students to apply their knowledge to real-world examples and understand the practical value of sociological research.

In addition to content, students focused on effective presentation skills. They used colour, images, and different fonts for headings, highlighted key sociological terms in bold, and ensured their slides were clear, well-organised, and not overloaded with information. Students were also tasked with finding a way to make their presentations engaging and ‘Find Susan’ showed great innovation and creation from one group.

This task has helped Year 10 students develop important, communication, presentation and ICT skills, while deepening their understanding of the role research plays in sociology and wider society.
