How Does Someone's Culture Help Them Stand in Their Power?

07 Nov

We are PROUD to be an inclusive school that delivers a broad and inspiring curriculum.

This week, our Year 10 Sociology students demonstrated their creativity by designing their own cultures, exploring how these could support people to “Stand firm in pride and power.”

As part of this lesson, students developed key norms and values their cultures would promote and designed unique flags and symbols to represent them. We were especially impressed by Amelia's rule of eating pasta three times a week, Joana’s culture, featuring the use of the letter J in her flag and symbol design, and Oludayo’s culture, named Inclusion, which creatively incorporated pink and blue to symbolize unity and acceptance and wants to celebrate every 12th day of the month. This activity encouraged students to think critically about this month’s Black History Month theme and explore how it connects to their sociological studies. Through this, our students showcased their ability to combine creativity, cultural awareness, and academic insight, embodying the values we celebrate as a community.
