CSI: Eastbrook

05 Jun

Our Criminology students have recently been introduced to their Unit 3 Controlled Assessment, exploring the fascinating journey of a criminal investigation from the crime scene through to the courtroom.

As part of this introduction, students examined the vital roles played by professionals involved in the criminal justice process. They compared the portrayal of Crime Scene Investigators (CSIs) in the popular television drama Silent Witness with the real-life forensic work featured in the BBC documentary Forensics: The Real CSI. This enabled students to evaluate the differences between media representations and the realities of forensic investigations.

To develop their understanding further, students researched the role of a Crime Scene Investigator and produced detailed job descriptions, identifying the key responsibilities, skills, and qualifications required for a career in forensic science.

Students also took part in an engaging online crime scene investigation, developed by Portsmouth University. The interactive task allowed them to apply their knowledge by examining evidence, analysing clues, and making decisions like those faced by real forensic investigators.

These activities have provided an excellent introduction to this Unit, helping students build the knowledge and analytical skills needed to explore how evidence is gathered, processed, and presented within the criminal justice system. We shall look forward to seeing them apply these skills as they progress through the unit into Year 13.
