Year 9 Students Cook Up a Storm with Their First Practical: Mushroom Risotto
This week, our Year 9 students stepped into the kitchen for the first time this year, ready to put their culinary skills to the test. The task? Preparing a classic, creamy mushroom risotto – a dish that challenges both patience and precision.
Under the guidance of Miss McKee and Mr Rose, the students learned essential cooking techniques, from sautéing mushrooms to slowly stirring in the stock to achieve that perfect creamy consistency. The classroom was filled with the delightful aroma of garlic, herbs, and simmering stock, making it clear that something special was cooking.
For many students, this was their first experience in a long time handling knives, stirring constantly, and timing multiple ingredients to perfection. Despite a few initial wobbles, the enthusiasm and determination were palpable. “It was really fun to see how the rice changes as you cook it,” said one student, “and I was proud when it actually tasted good!”
The practical not only introduced students to cooking skills but also encouraged teamwork, patience, and creativity.
By the end of the session, the Year 9s had not only produced delicious risotto but had also gained confidence in the kitchen – a skill that will serve them well beyond the classroom. We can’t wait to see what they cook up next!
