Year 10 Catering Students Finish Their First Term in Festive Style
As the Autumn term draws to a close, our Year 10 Hospitality students have wrapped up their first months of practical study with a deliciously festive challenge — creating their very own Christmas Yule Logs.
This project marked an important milestone in their GCSE Hospitality and Catering journey, giving students the chance to showcase the skills they have developed since September. From mastering the art of whisking the perfect sponge to practising precision in rolling and decorating, the class tackled each step with enthusiasm and growing confidence.
Under the guidance of Miss McKee and Mr Rose students explored traditional Yule Log techniques, including how to bake a light chocolate sponge, prepare rich buttercream, and use decorative methods to create the iconic “tree bark” effect. Not only did the task allow students to develop practical cooking skills, but it also encouraged problem-solving, time management, and attention to detail — all essential components of the catering curriculum.
The results were outstanding. The classroom was filled with the smell of chocolate and the buzz of pride as students stepped back to admire their final creations! For many, it was their first time attempting such a technical bake, making the sense of accomplishment even sweeter.
Well done to all our Year 10 Hospitality students for their hard work this term. Their festive Yule Logs are a wonderful testament to how far they’ve come — and an exciting preview of what they’ll achieve in the months ahead.
