Fresh Catch, Fantastic Results: Year 10s Megrim Masterclass
Our Year 10 Hospitality and Catering students enjoyed a fantastic opportunity to work with Megrim (Cornish Sole).
Thanks to an arrangement through the Food Teachers Centre, we took delivery of fresh Megrim Sole, giving students the chance to develop their fish preparation skills using a high-quality, sustainably sourced product. After learning about the fish and its culinary uses, students quickly got to work preparing and cooking their dishes.
The students produced two delicious recipes. One an oven-baked Megrim Sole dish, while another prepared breaded sole served on a bed of fresh salad and roasted peppers. Throughout the lesson, students demonstrated excellent knife skills, food preparation techniques, and attention to presentation.
The enticing aromas coming from the department kitchen soon attracted attention from around the school, with many staff members following their noses and popping in to sample the finished dishes. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and it was wonderful to see the pride students took in sharing their creations.
Experiences like these provide valuable opportunities for students to work with new ingredients, broaden their culinary knowledge, and gain confidence in the kitchen. It was great to see such enthusiasm and engagement from everyone involved, and we look forward to offering more exciting food experiences in the future.
