Sixth Form Visit to Parliament
A group of sixth form students visited The National Portrait Gallery and The Houses of Parliament. This was an opportunity for our Year 12 historians to view the historic Tudor portraiture as part of their A Level course and for the group to explore and appreciate the vast collection of artworks spanning centuries of history.
We also visited the Palace of Westminster and were very fortunate to have a tour which included viewing both chambers, the House of Lords and the House of Commons, while they were debating in session. We even had the opportunity to witness the procession of the speaker of the house as he entered the commons and learn about the history and processes of law-making in the UK.
In the afternoon, the students took part in a careers fair to gain an insight into the potential opportunities and professions that are available in different branches of government. I was really impressed with the quality of questions our students asked and with their engagement and communication with various professionals throughout the day. This was particularly evident when we met our local MP Margaret Mullane for a Q&A session, taking time out of her busy schedule to give us a fascinating insight into the many roles and day-to-day systems that are part of the MP’s job.
