Eastbrook Commemorates VE Day 80

20 May

Last week the Eastbrook History club organised a variety of activities as part of their VE Day 80 commemorations. The week began with an assembly to primary school students, sharing stories and experiences that related to VE Day in London and the local area in 1945. Aysha in Year 7 created a beautiful crochet banner to mark the event and shared her project in the assembly. Jack in Year 10 talked about his experiences of going into central London to see the armed forces and royal family appearing at Buckingham Palace. He even saw the amazing fly-past and the Red Arrows’ display!

Amelia in Year 7 produced an interesting quiz that was shared with tutor groups across the school, as well as a PowerPoint presentation of tutor-group activities relating to the History of VE Day.

As an act of respect, we visited the war memorial at Barking Park and students were able to lay a wreath of remembrance and hold a minute’s silence. This helped us to reflect on everything we’d learnt and to take a moment to consider all those people involved in conflict, and those who gave so much for a better future.

On Thursday we welcomed our local MP Margaret Mullane into school to meet the History club, who presented their project and shared their research. Ms Mullane MP also met our primary and secondary VE Day competition winners and a Year 10 student took her on a tour of the school. She was incredibly impressed with our students, their hard work and confidence. They really did us PROUD!

Part of the overall project was centred around a creative competition to design a commemorative plaque that would be made by the winner alongside the DT department. The winning plaque will be permanently displayed in the school foyer. We had an array of amazing, thoughtful and artistic designs from both primary and secondary school.

Eastbrook School could not be PROUDER of wonderful students and how respectfully and thoughtfully they commemorated VE Day 80.
