Celebrating Black Writers

05 Nov

As part of our Black Excellence week, students have been reading and continuing the openings of a range of texts by Black writers, recreating the original style and using their imaginations to extend the plots.

In Year 7 students read the openings to ‘Beloved’ by Toni Morrison and ‘Purple Hibiscus’ by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Year 8 explored ‘The Hate U Give’ by Angie Thomas and ‘Brown Girl Dreaming’ by Jaqueline Woodstone. Year 9 read ‘The Spider King’s Daughter’ by Chibundu Onuzo and ‘NW’ by Zadie Smith. Finally, Year 10 recreated ‘Brixton Rock’ by Alex Wheatle. As well as being exposed to the texts themselves, students were introduced to the biographies of these writers, learning about their backgrounds, influences and celebrating their successes.

We are PROUD of the writing produced by our students. Please see some examples of student work below, as well as pictures of some of the writers who inspired them.
