History in Disguise: Year One Create Clown Masks
This week, our Year One children brought history to life in the most colourful way - by creating their very own clown masks as part of their ongoing topic on the circus!
In this hands-on lesson, the children used card, oil pastels, and tissue paper to bring their designs to life. They were inspired by the children’s recent research into historical circus clowns. Last week, the class explored how clowns have changed over time, learning about their costumes, makeup, and the important role they played in traditional circus performances.
Using their sketches as a guide, each child carefully cut, coloured, and decorated a unique clown mask. The classroom was full of colour, creativity, and concentration as bright oil pastels and tissue paper transformed plain card into expressive clown faces.
It was a joy to see how thoughtfully the children worked, and they were rightly PROUD of their creations. The finished masks were fantastic — each one as unique and expressive as the child who made it. Well done, Year One!
