Urban Debating League Success!

On Thursday 26th January Eastbrook was proud to host the first round of the Urban Debating League (UDL). More than 18 of our students attended the event, making up a total of four debate teams. The Eastbrook teams argued their points against pupils from Hornchurch high school, Plashet school and The Bridge Academy in the after school event.

All of our teams worked well together to come up with and organise their ideas. For every debate, they had to decide who would present each point, who would formulate questions for the opposing team  and who would act as a summary speaker at the end of the debate. Some of the topics which were discussed involved the role of the royal family and the teachers’ strikes. For many students it was their first time debating and we enjoyed seeing them get involved and working so nicely with students from other year groups and classes.

Overall, Eastbrook performed well, winning   just over half of their debates. Students celebrated their success by munching on chicken wraps, hot chocolate and pizza half way through the evening and making friends with pupils from other schools. It was an incredibly positive event, which has been captured beautifully by our year 10 GCSE photographers in the photographs below.

We look forward to hosting the second round of the UDL in March and sharing our success with you again!
