To conclude Year 1’s PSHE unit ‘Healthy Me’, Year 1 pupils have today learnt how to cross the road safely. First, Super Cat’s Road Safety Story helped us to generate six important rules to follow;
- Think first. Where is the safest place to cross?
- Stop
- Use your eyes and ears
- Wait
- Look and listen
- Arrive safely
Once the rules were established, Year 1 learners showed great maturity and responsibility to put all of the advice that they had heard into practice. Using the driveway to the secondary school, children worked in pairs to identify the safest place to cross where there was a wide, open space so that we were easily visible. Then, we made our way to the kerbside before stopping and using our eyes and ears to look at and listen to our surroundings. Pupils sensibly waited and did one final check before stepping out into the road. Whilst crossing, we actively continued to look and listen and walked in a direct, straight line across the road without running. Gladly, everybody arrived on the other side of the road safely.
Year 1 pupils have promised to put these newly learnt skills into practice on all of their future journeys and to even teach their friends and families these essential skills.
