Plants, Plants, Plants!

In Reception, the children have been getting green fingers as they have been learning about plants in their science lessons. They were able to make their own flowers, knowing each part- string for roots, lollypop stick for the stem, green pipe cleaner for the leaves, and cupcake case for the flower. They learned a wonderful song that had actions to help them remember the parts’ names and some children were even able to recall the function of the different parts!

Investigating what we need as humans to stay alive we started to think about what plants need to grow and stay alive. Just like us, they need water and food. Adding a raindrop and coffee soil to their models. From their very catchy song, they learned that plants need sunlight, air, and space to grow to add a sun and air puff to their pictures. The children showed great curiosity throughout their science lessons, asking many questions about the plant’s life cycle.

They have decided like Errol from Errol’s Garden by Gillian Hibbs, their class story they want to grow potatoes, carrots, and sunflowers in the next term as we go into Spring! Watch out for the green fingers at the Eastbrook primary!
