A Numicon Number Line

Year 1 learners are approaching the end of their ‘Place value within 10’ unit and today used their lesson to explore the function of number lines. The children could quickly identify that they see number lines all around them in real life, for example, as tape measures, rulers or thermometers.

Using Widgit symbols to support them, pupils quickly absorbed some new key mathematical vocabulary such as ‘interval’ and ‘end point’ which were needed to fully grasp how number lines are formed and work. The children confidently applied this new knowledge to help them build a human number line across the classroom and then transferred these skills to work as a team to create a smaller sized number line using pieces of Numicon.

Year 1 will keep this useful tool in class to access in future maths lessons.
