The Climate Summit

On the 14th of March 2022 Jo Richardson School kindly hosted the first climate summit, informing the local youth on how the council plans on tackling the climate crisis. The event was attended by numerous schools in the borough, including primary and secondary schools. On arrival all guests were treated to food and drink as we sat down in the main hall. The premise of the event was to educate the attending students about the council’s vision on improving the local environment by 2050. Guest speaker, Martin Offiah, a former rugby player and reality TV star gave a heartfelt speech motivating students and informing them that the council’s goal was in fact. Martin is an ambassador for Connected Kerb, who supply electrical charging ports across the borough for the owners of electric cars who do not have the luxury of a drive way can. One of the organisers, Kate from Votes for schools informed everyone of the council’s six main goals being – Industry ( larger companies supplying money to smaller businesses to help them to become greener), Housing ( Further assisting new houses to becoming more insulated and reducing carbon footprint), Nature ( By planting 50,000 trees in the local parks and other places), Transport ( Adding 200 more electrical charging points in the area) and Recycling ( This goal aims to have all households recycle 35 percent of their waste). As a school, the Eastbrook Climate Change Committee aim to improve the school’s natural environment and assist in making the community a better place. Overall the event was very informative and useful to Eastbrook school as our newly formed Climate Change Committee prepare to reduce the carbon footprint of the school.
