Space, Sustainable Styles and Sums

On Thursday 14th December, I received the opportunity, along with my peers, on opportunities available and possible gateways in maths at A levels. This event was put together by the maths department as part of whole school enrichment program but targeted at girls and led by University of Greenwich.

We were also offered the chance to speak with representatives of Greenwich university and how they used maths in their respective professions.

We had 3 sessions about the use of maths in Fashion, Space and also the doors it could possibly open for us in the future.

The first session was on fashion and it was very interactive. I was shocked to see the amount of mathematical calculations and formulae used in designs. It was indeed an eye opener.

The second session explored the career routes that could be taken through A- Level maths. The presenters asked the class if there were any professions that did not need math, and proceeded to baffle us when they proved us wrong stating that almost all professions had math incorporated.

The third session took us light years ahead with the uses of math in space. This session included an arts and crafts section where we constructed helicopters, that everyone enjoyed, as well as informing us that landing on mars required trigonometry, which is a core topic in GCSE maths. Previously I had thought that maths in the future would be crazily advanced, but that session proved that what I’m learning now, is helping the world make fantastic discoveries about our solar system.
