The Digestive System

Pupils in year three took part in a hands on Science lesson this week. They learnt how the food we eat is processed and used in our bodies.

Firstly, the children cut up the food with cutlery, simulating their teeth. Next they added some saliva and put the contents into a plastic bag, acting as the stomach. They crushed the food in the bag, acting as the stomach muscles and added some stomach acid. Next the food entered the pancreas and lipase was included. Later, the food travelled to the intestines and all liquid was extracted. Finally, a hole was cut in the tights (intestine) and the waste product exited.

The children really enjoyed this activity and now have a greater understanding of the digestive process going on inside their bodies.
