This week in Year Five Maths we are learning about the concept of percentage.

We started by shading parts of a square divided into one hundred equal parts.

We shaded in squares and wrote the percentage that we had shaded.  When we shaded in ten squares, we wrote 10 %.  This is ten hundredths, which can be simplified to one tenth.

We used Unifix cubes to show percentages of amounts.  The rich discussion and the use of maths manipulatives helped develop conceptual understanding.

On Wednesday we used Unifix cubes to represent percentages of given numbers.  We found 10 % of a number and then used this knowledge to calculate other percentages.
