Saturated Solutions in Science!

This week, year 5 had the opportunity to visit the Science department, in the Secondary building, to be able to complete an investigation linked with their Autumn term learning. Year 5 were not only excited for some additional hands on experience, but they also wanted to share and demonstrate their understanding and enthusiasm in this subject with the Secondary teachers. It is safe to say they did!

Pupils used key vocabulary such as, substances, solutions, saturated, particles and much more. They applied the terms within the correct context and were then able to further develop their understanding as they explored density and how this change could be brought about.

For this investigation, pupils used salt, water, glass beakers and a stirrer. They used a measuring cylinder to measure 50 ml of water before adding one spoon of salt each time. They were trying to produce a saturated solution. Once they observed the changes, they began the investigation again. This time adding 5 spoons full each time and using warm water. Pupils were asked to observe the differences between each investigation and to describe the scientific process. Their responses were exemplary.

Year 5 displayed excellence in all aspects of their learning. We can’t wait for our next visit!
