Mission to Mars 1

Mission to Mars

In Mr. Pasterfield’sMaths class our topic is ‘Mission to Mars’.

Three teams, Perseverance, Curiosity and Hope will be given weekly missions.  These missions will require the application of key maths concepts.

Missions will include:

  • Making a scaled visual representation of the planets in our Solar System.
  • Using a hydrogen fuel cell – which can be used on Mars – to make clean, green energy.
  • Calculating the time to travel from Earth to Mars in a Space X rocket.
  • Calculating the time taken for light waves to travel from Earth to Mars.
  • Launching a water-pressure rocket.
  • Designing, making and testing a Mars Rover.
  • Designing, making and testing a Mars helicopter.

Mission 1: Representing our Solar System.

Concepts used:

  • Scaling
  • Ratio
  • Metric conversion
  • Place value
  • Division
  • Orbit
  • Star
  • Planet
  • Gravity

Teams used a table of planet distances from the Sun and their knowledge of place value to divide the distances.
