Parts Of The Plant Spectacular

Year 1 have had a super productive afternoon growing their brains. Building on their existing knowledge of plants and what they need to grow well, today the children explored the different parts of the plant to find out if they were all necessary. They quickly discovered that they were as each part had it’s own significant job. The Year 1 children acquired lots of new knowledge and vocabulary throughout the lesson, including facts like the roots are essential to absorb water and nutrients from the soil. They learnt that the stem has two jobs- it keeps the plant upright to receive as much sunlight as possible and also transports water all around the plant. The children can also discuss the function of the leaves, petals and anther.

After all of that learning, the children used their creative energy to produce their own plant pictures using a range of materials. We had string roots, art straw stems, foam leaves, cupcake case petals and risotto rice anther. They all look absolutely wonderful and have brightened up the classroom so much.

In the next session, the children will label their plant pictures accurately and further consolidate their learning of the function of the different parts of the plant.
