From The Shadow

During our Science lesson, Year Three, explored how shadow were formed. Through discussion, pupils all explained they have all seen their shadows before but why does this happen? Pupils learnt that light travels in a straight line, which meant that it is unable to go around an object. As a result, this meant that there must be a reason why light is unable to pass through their bodies. Year Three pupils also learnt that their bodies are opaque, consequently this meant, their bodied are able to block light.

Pupils also discovered that once an object is able to block both natural or artifical light it will cast a shadow. With further exploration, they experimented with the effect of distance on the size of a shadow. It was amazing for pupils to understand, discover and explain that the change in the size of a shadow depends on how close the object is to the light source.
