Dark side of chocolate

Year 4 and 5 have been learning about the manufacture of chocolate during their topic work.  They have learnt that the main raw ingredient in chocolate is cocoa, that grows in pods on trees, in tropical regions.  They have located the ten countries that produce the most cocoa pods on world maps and looked at how the pods are harvested. Some countries use child labour to harvest the crop and sometimes the children are not treated well. Pupils discussed children’s rights and how the chocolate companies should have a duty of care towards their workers. They then wrote emotive diaries, imaging that they were cocoa workers. The writing provoked some powerful feelings.
