Branching out to learn in the Forest

Pupils in year six took had an exciting afternoon in the forest. Firstly, they added branches, pine cones and leaves to add to the bug hotel, in order to provide a home for insects.

Next, the pupils were shown how to use loppers in order to coppice some of the trees in the forest. Coppicing enables the tree to grow more healthily and it is safer for pupils when they are moving around in the forest. The children were confident in using the loppers and performed a grand job in the forest.

Lastly, they collected some long sticks so they can knot them together and make some Christmas stars next week in the classroom.
