Blue Cross – Animals At War

On Armistice Day, our Year 6 children took part in an online webinar, hosted by the Blue Cross, to find out about the sacrifice and the work of animals during the First World War.

As part of our learning in history, the children have looked at the different symbols used by people to represent their respect and remembrance, one such symbol being the purple poppy. The purple poppy is used to signify remembrance of the animals who had no choice but to take part in the atrocities of war.

The Blue Cross was established just before the First World War and helped to look after the animals both during and after the conflict had ended.

If you get the chance, ask your children about the carrier pigeons, war dogs and horses of the First World War and they will surely give a compassionate and empathetic response.
