Amazing Aquatic Adventure!

Year Three travelled to central London today to visit the Sealife Aquarium, as part of their Geography work on islands. The children displayed our school virtues of kindness, patience, zest, love of learning and curiosity whilst on the educational visit. Everyone was a great ambassador for our school whilst we were out and acted with the utmost maturity.

When the children arrived at the Southbank, they were very impressed to see the London Eye towering over them. The next amazing sight was the busy river Thames, with it’s many pleasure craft, sight seeing boats and barges chugging up and down the river. There were lots of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ of excitement when the children saw the twinkling gold Houses of Parliament and Queen Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben). Finally, we entered ‘County Hall’ or the London Aquarium our destination for the next few hours…

Firstly, the children were incredibly brave and walked over the shark tank! Deep down, beneath their feet reef sharks and tiger sharks swam in the waters. The children managed to cross the tank and there were some screams of excitement when they saw the enormous fish swimming under their feet!

Next came the Atlantic tanks, pupils came close up to some rays and were able to stoke a star fish! It was very soft and quite wriggly! The children saw some different varieties of fish who live in these cold waters, including seahorses.  As they ventured further into the depths, they saw lots of colourful clown fish hiding in the corals. Walking through the tunnel was an amazing experience, the children could see rays swimming above their heads and even a leather back sea turtle!

The tropical jungle was the next destination, terrapins swam in warm pools of water, leaf cutter ants carried leaves around the children’s heads, bright blue frogs and a luminous green snake were also spotted in some of the leafy terrariums. Gigantic piranhas with sharp teeth and enormous cat fish prowled through some of the river tanks here…

The next creatures were lots of pupils’ favourites… the very funny and cute penguins! Pupils saw them diving, waddling around and swimming right up to the glass to have a closer look at the Eastbrook children. The children also encountered some Arctic animals of a killer whale and polar bear through some computer animation.

Last of all, there was the jelly fish zone. The pupils were mesmerised by the bright colours and beautiful, smooth movements of the creatures in the waters. The children also got to create their own jelly fish in a computer game and make it swim around!

It was an amazing educational visit and pupils will be using their knowledge of aquatic life in their Geography and English work later this term.
