There’s Still Life in the Visual Arts Department

Meet some of our Year 8 and 9 high achievers tackling perhaps the hardest of all art practices, drawing from direct observation, ‘primary source’.

A ‘primary source’ artwork is one that represents objects that have been directly viewed in ‘real life’ by the artists. ‘Secondary source’ artwork is a little easier, as artists copy from an image. There is nothing scarier in art than starting with a blank page and to have to produce an image from the real world! Working from primary sources is much harder as the artist has to find a way to render three dimensional objects on a two dimensional surface.

At Eastbrook School, we challenge our high achievers to work with primary sources from a young age. Do you think you can draw these objects correctly? Why not have a go!
