Some Beans

Week beginning 22.02.21

Monday’s social skills group got off to an amazing start. We are continuing to work on skills needed to have a conversation and we looked at a Blackadder clip where Edmund is trying to teach Baldrick maths and then they did presentations with camera on with their favourite objects and we discussed why they chose them.

On Tuesday, our lovely year 7s were working from the talk about program looking at the different skills needed to have a successful conversation which we went on to practice by each choosing an object that they liked that they could speak about whilst the rest of the group listened and then asked questions. All put in 100 per cent effort and all had a go showing great courage and confidence. They also played a listening game on YouTube where they all had to guess the sound. A great afternoon.

On Wednesday, our year 8 wellbeing group were looking at using creativity with our imagination to help us feel good and find our own unique superpowers. We used Disney puppet characters and each person thought of a name and thought what they would like and said why. We also looked at how breathing and laughter sounds can make our mood feel good even if we are feeling low. They watched a video clip using laughter sounds, breathing and positive affirmation and joined in. All participated really well.

We also had a successful coffee afternoon on zoom with parents. We focused on how parents can support literacy at home.

On Thursday morning we had a great session with the year 7s looking at listening and memory skills, discussing learning styles and support and talking about topics of interest to help increase appropriate conversation, taking turns and listening to each other. We played a listening game called guess the sound using tube video. They worked really well and were fully engaged.

On Thursday afternoon our year 9s had their literacy support/ study sessions. We looked at different learning styles and did a quiz to determine how the students learnt best and looked at different techniques they could use to access the learning. We also discussed specific difficulties and creating solutions. All participated appropriately and well.

On Friday year 8 in their literacy support lesson used once upon a picture to create a story. They explored in chat and verbally what they could see and then used the when/ where. What, why, how, who questions to create an imaginative scene. They then worked on Bedrock and readingwise. An excellent lesson.

In the afternoon I had a well-being check in with our year 9;s it was really great to see and here how the support that has been put in place with cooperation of parents , and teachers with our support to enable these young people to become more confident learners and more resilient in life in general.
