Reasoning and Problem Solving skills

Teachers at Eastbrook School are continually developing to make learning engaging and challenging for students.  This afternoon the Mathematics department hosted a workshop attended by teachers from Eastbrook and other local schools to look at how students can solve mathematical problems by applying their reasoning skills.  Reasoning and Problem Solving type questions are featuring more and more in GCSE exams, year on year.

Today was the second workshop in a series of four workshops.  Students would have realised over the last few months that maths lessons now feel different, students are enjoying maths much more than they usually do.

Teachers looked at problems and explored how they could build ‘chains of reasoning’ where students will be asked a variety of questions from the same presented scenario.  This not only prepares them for every possible unseen exam question, but is also a much more fun way of learning, as you get to work in pairs or groups and build on your skills and knowledge through dialogue with peers and teachers.

Parents should ask their children about what they are learning in maths, and students should ask their maths teachers – what problem are we solving next lesson.
