Doing What We Do Despite Lockdown

Supporting English language development via remote learning is not the easiest thing my team has ever done. We rely on face-to-face interactions, on class vibes, and on the ability to see and hear each other. We act things out. We respond to the needs of our learners moment to moment. Most of all, our vivacious classes of children from across the globe teach and mentor each other. The EAL department operates as a big, crazy family.

So, naturally, not seeing my ‘family’ for six weeks has been really difficult.

Nevertheless, the EAL department is here for our students and for our colleagues. We’re posting work on character education, history, geography, reading, writing, science, maths, and art. We’re encouraging students to read for comprehension, write passionately, analyse texts critically, hone passions, and discover new skills and hobbies.

The most beautiful thing is that many of our students are reaching back, asking for help, and responding to our messages and prompts. It’s a weird time to be doing school, whether a teacher, student, or parent. We’re here for you. If you’re stuck with work or just need some encouragement, reach out via email or SMHW.
