Black Excellence in Religious Studies – Robert Beckford & Black Theology

Our students undertook independent study into the variety of research and documentaries by Robert Beckford.

Students explore the ideas around Black Theology and the contributions of African religious believers have had on the formation and development of world religion.

Two of the documentaries explored were: God is Black (2004) which compared white and black people’s interpretation of Christianity and Who Wrote the Bible? (2004) which challenges the long-standing belief by many Christians that the Bible is the pure unadulterated word of God untouched by human hand. Afterwards, students discuss the casting of Morgan Freeman as God in Bruce Almighty(2003).

Students engaged with Q&As and classroom debate over the the numerous topics explored in both films.
