The English Department are excited to meet you all in September.
In the meantime, we’d like you to complete some of these tasks – there are four listed below. You will also find a Summer reading challenge at the bottom – have a go at this and you’ll be entered in a prize draw in September.
*1. Write your own Limerick
A Limerick is a form of poetry that follows a strict rhyme scheme and pattern of rhythm. For example:
There was a young girl called Jill
Who freaked at the sight of a drill.
She brushed every day.
Her dentist did say,
‘Your teeth are quite perfect, no bill.’
Notice how lines 1, 2 and 5 always rhyme with each other and have 8 syllables. Lines 3 and 4 also rhyme with each other and have 5 syllables.
We’d like you to have a go at writing your own Limerick. Click on the blue ‘Limericks’ link which will take you to a Powerpoint presentation to help you: Limericks
*2. Read a story
Read the story ‘The Man with the Yellow Face’ by Anthony Horowitz. It’s a really engaging mystery story.
Click on this link to access the story: The Man With the Yellow Face
When you have read it, answer the questions which you’ll find on this link: The Man with the Yellow Face Tasks
If you don’t have a printer you can just write the answers on a sheet of paper and hand that in to your new teacher.
*3. Film Club
With someone in your family, watch a film based on a book that you have read. Have a chat about what you both thought of the adaptation.
*4. Sit back and listen
