Sweet Subtraction

The children in Reception had a tasty treat in their Maths lesson this week. What better way to learn about subtraction than eating sweets. In small groups the children were able to show their virtue of team work and work together to complete the task.

First they had to count out the first amount, then the fun bit, they had to eat the second amount after the minus symbol. Then count the sweets they had left to give them the answer. It was giggles all round as this concrete example of subtraction really helped the children understand the new concept.

They continued this task for home learning, where they moved to a pictorial practice, crossing off the bears to count the left overs. What super subtractors!
