Super Scientists – Floating and Sinking

The children in Year 1 have been learning all about materials this term. So far, their lessons have covered exploring the purpose of materials and identifying a range of different materials, identifying objects and the materials that they are made from and describing materials using the correct scientific vocabulary. This week the children used their inquisitiveness and enquiry skills to answer a very important question- Which materials float and which sink? After clarifying the important, technical language in the question, the children set to work using objects from around their homes and classroom to test. The engagement in this task was so pleasing and everybody was thrilled to be finding out which objects would float or sink. What impressed Mrs Turner most, was the correct use of the scientific language as the children explained what was happening. Sentences like ‘The metal coin is sinking because it is too heavy’, were being created by many of the children. Some children even went on to produce their findings in really well-presented tables of results. A really successful and practical science lesson which gives the children a secure foundation for their next lesson, where they will be exploring the absorbency of different materials.
