Smartie Pants!

Year 1 delved into the world of data during yesterday’s maths lesson. The children started their new unit of learning off  by defining some of the key vocabulary to be used throughout the lesson, including ‘data’ and ‘table’. The children now know the importance of organising collected data into a table so that it is easier to read and interpret.

Of course, before the children could produce their own tables, they needed to collect some data of their own so we popped open some tubes of Smarties to see if every tube had the same number of each different colour. The children were great at sorting the Smarties into their colour groups and carefully counting them up and were able to transfer the data confidently into their tables.

The results were startling- whilst every tube had 27 sweets in total, there were huge variations between how many of each colour were in each tube. Mrs Turner’s favourite colour Smartie is orange and her tube only had two orange sweets, but some tubes contained up to six orange delights. The children really enjoyed analysing and comparing their findings.

And after all that hard work, all that was left to do was to eat them all, which Year 1 did with great gusto!
