Gadget Repair Workshop

Year six took part in an interactive gadget workshop today, as part of Repair and Science week! They had the task to repair and put together a microscope by following a series of instructions. The children used their skills of co-operation, critical thinking, problem solving and many more in order to make the microscope work. Some of the small parts were tricky to place in the correctly in the microscope such as the lenses but everyone was able to succeed in the task and make a fully working microscope.

When the microscope was constructed, the children had immense fun in looking at everyday classroom objects through the microscope. They found that the carpet looked like spiders, strands of hair looked like thick rope, their skin looked like it was scaly or peeling off! There was some shrieks of horror and laughter when they looked through the lenses!

At the end of the lesson, the pupils reflected on whether they would repair electrical items in the future or whether they would buy a new item and throw the broken one away. When they learnt how much electrical waste is thrown away every three months in the UK, they realised that reusing and repairing damaged goods.
