Evolution!

Year 5 & 6 took part in an experiment to help their understanding of the concept of evolution today. In the space of a single afternoon the children enacted millions of years of adaptation, natural selection and evolution only for their surviving species of lizard to be wiped out by a meteorite! This session truly engaged the curiosity and creativity of the children.

Along the learning journey the children built up a solid understanding of the concept of evolution and how different environmental pressures such as climate, the need to hunt and to avoid predators would impact and change the course of a species evolution and change. Although far from perfect, even through the discarded drawings of the lizards which were not chosen through natural selection, the children managed to create and were able to discuss their very own phylogeny of living beings.
