A Day at the Museum!

Year Three visited the British Museum in Bloomsbury today, the focus of their visit was to observe primary artefacts from ancient Egypt.

The pupils were amazed by the vast collection of mummies, they even spotted mummified fish and snakes! Some of the mummy coffins were beautifully painted with hieroglyphics and gold. Lots of pupils found the mummified cat, a particular highlight of the day! They were interested in the Canopic jars, Shabtai figures, amulets and papyrus scrolls, often buried with mummies.

Everyone was amazed that there was a mummified body that even had hair, skin and very white teeth! They found out that the dry desert conditions had preserved his body so well.

Downstairs in the museum, pupils were awestruck by some of the enormous sarcophagus and stone pillars, beautifully carved with hieroglyphics. They also observed the Rosetta stone, a very important key piece of history that led us to be able to read hieroglyphics.

The children were incredibly well behaved, despite being in a busy museum on a hot day. They were treated to cool ice poles by Leona’s dad when they returned to school, the pupils were very appreciative of this kind gesture. The visit will inspire, enthuse and bring to life their current History topic!
