21st Century Chaucer

The pictures may look like an irresponsible school trip to a public house, but actually this is the stage setting for The Wife Of Willesden, a modern interpretation of Chaucer’s classic from the Canterbury Tales, The Wife of Bath.
Year 12 are due to study the original text as part of their A Level course, so we were delighted to hear that Zadie Smith’s incredible modernised play version of the text was showing at the Kiln Theatre, Kilburn, and we snapped up tickets.
Smith moves the text from the 14th century to the 21st, and the results are brilliant; this is a hilarious and clever reworking of the original. The sixth form English students absolutely loved it, even claiming that their faces hurt from laughing and smiling.
