Anne Frank’s Holocaust Seminar

On Thursday 27th January, as part of Eastbrook’s Jewish week of activities, Eastbrook joined hundreds of students, across tens of schools, for the Anne Frank Trust’s online interactive learning event marking Holocaust Memorial Day 2022 with Holocaust Survivor Eva Clarke BEM.

Born on April 29th 1945 on a cart in the open without any assistance, Eva Clarke was one of only three babies born in Mauthausen concentration camp who survived the Holocaust. If the camp’s gas chambers hadn’t been blown up the previous day and the Americans hadn’t liberated Mauthausen just days after Eva’s birth, neither mother or child would have survived.

The year 9 students were gripped by her stories as she escaped the jaws of death. Some of our students commented –

“Many families perished – losing their lives because they were different” – Shantija

“That thousand and thousands of people suffered and behind each is a person with a story.” – Tamara

Their accounts echo one of many reasons why Eastbrook ensures that cultural events are accessible to our students.

The event was hosted the Mayor of London.
